How to Publish Research Pages That AI Can Cite

Original Data Can Become a Durable GEO Asset

Brands often publish surveys, benchmarks, test results, and industry reports as campaign assets. The data may be useful, but the page is frequently designed around a download form or a graphic-heavy PDF.

That limits discoverability and citation. AI systems need enough visible context to understand what was measured, when it was measured, and what the result actually means.

A citation-ready research page turns original data into a transparent web source.

Start With a Clear Research Question

The page should state the question before presenting conclusions.

Examples include:

  • How often do AI assistants recommend brands in this category?
  • Which product attributes matter most in customer reviews?
  • How long does a battery last under a defined test?
  • Which integrations are most requested by small teams?
A narrow question creates more useful findings than a report trying to cover an entire industry.

Explain the Methodology

AI and human readers need to evaluate the evidence. Include:

  • data collection dates
  • sample size
  • sample source
  • inclusion and exclusion rules
  • markets and languages
  • tools or models used
  • scoring method
  • known limitations
If AI outputs are part of the research, record platform, model, search mode, query set, and number of repeated runs.

Define Every Metric

Terms such as visibility, engagement, accuracy, recommendation rate, or trust score can mean different things.

Give each metric a direct definition and, when useful, a formula. Explain whether percentages use responses, queries, users, or brands as the denominator.

Clear definitions make the data reusable without distortion.

Put Key Findings in HTML

Do not make the PDF the only source. Publish the main findings, methodology, tables, and explanations on an indexable HTML page.

Use:

  • a short summary at the top
  • descriptive headings
  • accessible tables
  • text explanations for charts
  • downloadable raw or summarized data when appropriate
  • links to methodology and related research
Charts can help humans, but the underlying values should also appear in text or tables.

Write Findings as Complete Claims

A chart label alone may lack context. Write complete statements that include population, time, and conditions.

Weak:

Recommendation rate increased 24 percent.

Stronger:

Across 300 English-language product recommendation queries tested in June 2026, brands with current comparison pages appeared in primary recommendations 24 percent more often than brands without them.

Only publish a claim this specific when the methodology supports it.

Separate Observation From Interpretation

State what the data shows, then explain your interpretation. Do not present an opinion as a measured result.

For example:

Observation: 42 of 60 cited pages displayed an updated date within the previous six months.

Interpretation: Freshness may influence source selection for commercial queries, but this study does not prove causation.

This distinction increases credibility.

Make the Page Easy to Reference

Use a stable URL and visible publication date. Name the organization and authors. Include a suggested citation, contact information, and correction policy.

If the dataset changes, preserve version notes so older references remain understandable.

Use Appropriate Structured Data

Article, Report, Dataset, or ScholarlyArticle may be appropriate depending on the content. Structured data should reflect visible information, including author, date, publisher, and dataset details.

Do not add fields that the page does not substantiate.

Avoid Common Research-Content Mistakes

Common problems include:

  • no methodology
  • percentages without denominators
  • unclear sample dates
  • conclusions stronger than the data
  • charts with no accessible values
  • mandatory download before any findings are visible
  • silent changes to the dataset
These issues reduce trust even when the underlying research is valuable.

Bottom Line

Original research can create a strong and defensible source for AI search, but only when the evidence is transparent and accessible.

Publish the question, methodology, definitions, findings, limitations, and update history in clear HTML. That gives AI systems a source they can understand and gives readers a result they can verify.
